Top Frequently Asked Questions . . . and some answers!

Working and traveling in rural Alaska and rural America, I come across questions that people ask me, and ask each other, about the internet, e-commerce and online auctions. Here are some of those questions. As to the answers, they are just one possibility. When you read them and have other solutions or ideas, send them in. This is where we can all learn and bennifit. And of course, if you have another FAQ, or frequently asked question, send it in!

Do I need a digital camera to sell online? What kind? Photos sell the product or service. So the best way is with a digital camera. You can also use a scanner and scan photos. But cameras are best. What kind? Low cost is all. Just a "one mega-pixel" camera is the most you will need for any web photo.

What is the resolution for the fastest loading photos? When you have a digital photo, save it as 72 dots per inch resolution. Adobe Photoshop Elements does this nicely (and you can download a free trial online - see Handy Links above) but most likely your own camera or scanner software will also do this. So, 72 dots per inch. BTW, eBay photos are often 400 X 300 in actual pixel size. That's the other number you want to know.

Does it cost to join eBay and start selling? Yes and no. It doesn't cost to start, but when you post your first item to sell, it will cost maybe $1.50 or $1.80, depending on your choices. You will always know the costs before you click that final "sell" button. And you won't be charged till the end of the month. So it is easy. If you list and sell your item before the end of the month then you are ahead of the game. Just start. You only need your checking account info and Visa number, but no charges till the end of the month.
How do I get an email address? And where do I get it? There are two kinds of email accounts, free and ones that cost money. For starters, you can easily get a free account. Many people use either Hotmail or Yahoo! for their email. To get one, just go to either www.hotmail.com or www.yahoo.com. We usually use Hotmail in the workshops. Both have lots of extra things to do on their sites. Both are huge. It's really up to you so just look at them both and decide. This is the address you will receive your email notifications from online auctions such as eBay, uBid or YahooShopping. Keep your password safe and hidden.
